More information….
Al Mele, who passed away in August 2018, was a staunch supporter of Roar on the Shore®. He contributed his skills, labor and equipment in ways too numerous to mention. Among the many Roar® projects on which Al worked was SafeNet’s Big Backyard Children’s Garden in 2010. This project resulted in building a safe place for children to be children and do what all children want to do – play. This project was near and dear to Al’s heart. He not only donated all of the heavy equipment but also took a great deal of time away from his small business to operate the equipment and direct the entire effort that was completed in record time. He was an invaluable part of the project and its success is a direct result of his efforts. In addition to his community service he also served his country in Vietnam and ultimately fell victim to Agent Orange.
On Thursday July 18, at 10 a.m. friends and family of Al Mele will gather in the Hub in Perry Square to dedicate the first official ride of the 2019 rally to Al. We will ride in his honor to the Big Backyard Children’s Garden that Al helped build and dedicate a memorial stone in his honor. This ride is free and open to everyone, particularly veteran brothers and sisters. Join us in honoring this special man and see the result of his efforts that have provided young children a safe haven in which to play.
